How social reformers could transform livery company philanthropy

2019-11-08T11:40:45+00:00

A speech by PBHA’s former interim CEO Debby Ounsted calls on livery companies to take inspiration for their philanthropic activities from three great women social reformers, says Brian Jones. Deborah Ounsted CBE, PBHA’s former interim Chief Executive, completed her term as Master to The Mercers’ Company this month (July). I chanced upon Deborah’s speech to the annual dinner of the City of London Livery Companies hosted by the Lord Mayor in March. It is well worth a read. Making the case for the continuing relevance of the Livery Companies, she draws on the example of three great women social reformers– Elizabeth [...]

Solving the housing crisis, one politician at a time

2019-11-08T11:46:12+00:00

On 17 March, PBHA joined over 2,300 people from 300 organisations at an inspiring rally to deliver the message to politicians that solving the housing crisis must be a priority. Here’s a summary of what we heard, and why we’re supporting the Homes for Britain campaign. The rally was coordinated by Homes for Britain, a national campaign calling on politicians from every party to commit to ending the housing crisis within a generation .The campaign is based on the premise that everyone has the right to a decent, affordable home but the UK’s failure to build enough housing has resulted in [...]

PBHA tenants take part in Islington Council’s Tough Choices consultation

2015-02-16T13:22:38+00:00

Budget cuts aren’t a happy topic, but it was good to share our views with the Council, writes Emma Robinson, PBHA’s Supported Housing Manager. Following an invitation from PBHA, Councillor Andy Hull came over to Legard Works on January 22, to meet with a group of tenants as part of Islington Council’s ‘Tough Choices’ budget cuts consultation. He told the Finsbury Park-based tenants how much money the council needs to save in the coming financial year, and how it will make these savings. Attendees heard which services will be affected, which will change and which have been protected from cuts. A [...]

Meaningful conversations about mental health

2019-02-14T12:38:32+00:00

Change Together is a PBHA and VC Hackney-led project to raise mental health awareness in Hackney and Islington, through conversations with members of the public at local events. Volunteer Amy shares her experiences so far.   I think the best thing has been bringing people together to a safe and vibrant space where they can have meaningful experiences and conversations relating to mental health.   Creating natural environments for these to happen has meant that the shared thought and feelings have all been very genuine. And often quite in-depth.   This is very moving to me - relating to one another as fellow humans.   [...]

Change Together: Sharing experiences of mental health

2019-02-14T12:38:30+00:00

Change Together volunteer Stephen Baynes talks about his experience of challenging mental health stigma in the community through conversation with people at events in Hackney, as part of a Time to Change-funded project.   My name is Stephen and I’m a volunteer Change Maker and a steering group member for Change Together, a project led by Peter Bedford Housing Association and Volunteer Centre Hackney, and funded by Time to Change.   I’m someone who has experienced mental health issues and I thought this would be a great channel for creating awareness around mental health.   It's very important to challenge the stigmas and discrimination people with mental [...]
