Furniture Making at the Workshop

This course will run over 10 weeks, with classes every Tuesday 6- 8:30pm starting 10th October 2017

The course fee is £180, all materials provided.

In October a new evening course is starting at the Workshop. Participants will craft their own side table and learn the skills and techniques required for a host of furniture making and DIY tasks. The side table is an elegant classic that combines all the essential methods of joinery.

The sessions will cover the following:
– The safe use of hand tools.
– Basic joinery techniques
– Precision wood cutting, measuring and assembling techniques
– Different material properties and common uses
– Mortise and tenon jointing methods
– Paint, varnish and wax finishes
– Solid wood or plywood design options for the table top.

Our trained furniture designer, Jonathan Rothenburg, will be leading the classes. He started designing and making bespoke and small batch produced furniture in the 1990 for private customers and retail outlets. In addition he designed furniture and accessories for high street retail outlets including Heals and The Conran Shop and many other independent sellers.

Jonathan began teaching woodwork courses in 2005, first in a community workshop called Hackney 180 run for disadvantaged adults, then at Hackney Community College. He started working part time for PBHA in 2013, and alongside leasing these classes he works on private furniture design and commissions.
