Philip Glanville, Mayor of Hackney officially launches The Coffee Shop

On Friday 9th December, Peter Bedford Housing Association (PBHA) officially launched its newest social enterprise, The Coffee Shop. Philip Glanville, Mayor of Hackney, stood by as Sarah Hayes, former PBHA participant cut the ribbon at the launch event where guests enjoyed a free hot drink and mince pie. The Coffee Shop will provide barista, food preparation and service training for people who are looking to start a career in hospitality and may require additional support. In August, Peter Bedford Housing Association ran a focus group with tenants led by staff member Mandy Mansfield and theory of change expert Rosie Chadwick and Mandy looking at the difference Peter Bedford makes in our tenants lives. It helped us to describe how we support and house tenants, and pick out what we do that is most valued and helps our tenants most their journey to independence and recovery. Clare Norton appointed chair of g320 Group

Clare Norton, CEO of Peter Bedford Housing Association, has been made chair of the g320 Group. g320 represents small housing associations in London – with fewer than 1000 homes – as part of the National Housing Federation London. Clare was elected at the group’s AGM in October. Clare takes over the role from John Delahunty, Chief Executive of Innisfree HA. Peter Bedford Housing Association is calling for the support of the local community to win £25,000 funding towards a project to improve the lives of residents with mental ill health through ‘unlocking’ talent as part of the Aviva Community Fund 2016. PBHA is competing for community votes to have a chance of winning funding of up to £25,000, which would support 45 people with mental ill health to discover and use their talents through a range of activity-based courses on woodwork, textiles, printmaking and illustration. On Thursday 20th October, Peter Bedford Housing Association was proud to be one of the first 15 Social Enterprises to receive the new Pioneering Social Enterprise in Hackney Mark. Certificates were awarded by Philip Glanville, Mayor of Hackney at the launch event organised by Hackney Co-operative Developments and hosted by UBS at their new offices in Broadgate. Hon Jeremy Corbyn MP, a long standing supporter of the local housing charity, to speak at a launch event for a new project Enterprising People held in our north London social enterprise shop and gallery, Outpost. Over 40 guests gathered late morning for tea and birthday cake refreshments at Outpost, our popular social enterprise arts and craft home wares shop on Holloway Road. Real Opportunities, a new pre-employment programme in Hackney

On Wednesday 14th September, we launched Real Opportunities, a new pre-employment programme for autistic people and/or people with Learning Disabilities living in Hackney. The programme is funded by Hackney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Hackney Council. Our partners are Volunteering Matters and Hackney Council for Voluntary Services (HCVS). For over 20 years, PBHA has supported individuals with a learning disability into accommodation, training and employment activities. According to Mencap, 1 in 3 people with a learning disability take part in some form of employment or training, whilst only 6.6% are in paid employment. Creative Industries Showcase at the Kingsland Hub

The annual Creative Industries Showcase at the Kingsland Hub took place on Wednesday 29th June and celebrated a year of creative and exciting work from our fine art, wood work, craft, textiles and Supporting Makers programmes. The event was attended by tenants, staff and the public and featured stand out arts and craft work, photos of group sessions and invitations to join a wide variety of creative courses while guests also enjoyed a selection of complementary mocktails.
